Advisory Update

Beyond the Screen

Over the past few weeks, our Advisory sessions have transitioned from practical organizational habits into a deep exploration of mental well-being and the digital landscape. We began by equipping students with tangible "brain buffers" through such as drawing, where we shifted the focus from artistic perfection to the physiological benefits of flow states and stress reduction. This served as a vital foundation for our broader discussion on The World’s Happiest Country, which challenged students to look beyond the "happiness race" of grades and social status to find the balance and safety found in cultures like Finland’s.

Central to these lessons was a candid look at how modern technology acts as a "joy thief" via social media and AI-driven algorithms. By examining the "Digital Detox" concept, students explored how apps are designed to keep them in a state of high alert rather than contentment, often leading to a cycle of comparison and FOMO. Bringing these topics together is essential because it empowers our students to recognize that happiness is not a competitive sport but a byproduct of being present. By teaching them to put down the phone and pick up a creative hobby, we are helping them retrain their brains to value real-world connection over digital validation, ensuring they have the mental tools to navigate an increasingly loud and distracting world.

Reminders:

No Toys or costumes at school

As you know, Kuna Middle School has had students either bringing items to school that are distracting or using items inappropriately to purposefully distract from learning. We do not allow students to carry toys with them. This includes stuffed animals, large fidgets, squishy fidgets, etc. We also do not allow students to wear costumes to school including wearing "tails". These are sometimes fashion items however they are distracting to the learning environment and not appropriate for school.
Thanks for your support with helping to keep a positive learning environment for all students.
If you need help determining an appropriate item that your child can use for support, please contact your child's counselor.
