This week in advisory, students participated in RAK (Random Acts of Kindness) Week, where we focused on how small actions can have a big impact on our school community. Students watched a short video about Norm, a character who demonstrates how everyday choices influence the people around us. Norm isn’t loud or attention-seeking; his influence comes from simple, consistent actions that others notice and often imitate. Through this, students discussed how kindness can spread quickly and shape the culture of a school.
Students also watched a video summarizing the work of the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation, which highlights the science behind kindness. Students learned that witnessing acts of kindness releases oxytocin (often called the “love hormone”) which can lower blood pressure, improve heart health, and increase feelings of optimism and self-esteem. Research also shows that helping others can boost energy levels, reduce stress and depression, and increase feelings of self-worth. Over time, acts of kindness and service are linked to improved overall health and even a longer lifespan.
To put their learning into action, students wrote thank-you notes to people they appreciate, including teachers, staff, friends, family, and our very own SRO, Detective Lakey. It was a meaningful week that emphasized how small, thoughtful actions can positively influence others and strengthen our school community.
