Safety Protocols at Kuna Middle School

Safety and security are of the utmost importance at Kuna Middle School. You may have noticed several security measures in place at our school. Parents have to "buzz-in" at the front door of the school to enter, all perimeter doors of the school are locked at all times, staff are on duty inside and outside throughout the day, we have an SRO, and dedicated security personnel. We also practice safety drills often.

Kuna School District follows the Idaho Standard Command Responses for Schools (ISCRS) for emergency procedures. This is standard responses for:
Hall Check: classroom & office doors are locked, teachers continue teaching, students are not allowed in the halls.
Lock Down: classroom & office doors are locked, teachers and students shelter silently out of sight in the classroom with lights off.
Evacuation: also known as a fire drill.
Reverse Evacuation: during recess or before school, student re-enter the building to a specific class.

Academic Supports

The staff at Kuna Middle School is committed to helping our students succeed academically! We have many programs and resources designed to give your child the support they need to do well in school. We encourage all families to use these resources. Together, we can help our students reach their academic goals.

Tutor.com

Tutor.com is an online service that connects students with live tutors to help them with schoolwork. Think of it like a library study room, but it's on the internet and you can get help any time of the day or night. It's designed to give students one-on-one help to understand tough subjects and finish their homework.

WIN Time

WIN Time stands for "What I Need." It's a special time built into the school day to provide every student with personalized support. It allows teachers to give extra help to students who are struggling, and offer challenging and interesting activities to those who are on track. WIN is attached to student's 3rd period class and students move to the appropriate class based on academic data.

Teacher Office Hours

Teacher office hours are Tuesdays and Thursdays 2:30-3:15pm. Students can get extra help from their teachers outside of class time. These sessions allow students to work with their teacher one-on-one or in a small group. Students can ask specific questions about homework or tests, and teachers can explain things in new ways. Students must have their own ride home.

Grade Checks

Kuna Middle School will check grades for all students every Friday during Advisory. Parents will receive an email with their child's grades every Friday evening. We encourage you to spend a few moments each weekend reviewing your child's academic progress with them.
Keeping an eye on your child's grades is an important way to stay updated on how they are doing and to find any areas where they may need extra help. By checking in weekly, you can help them stay on track to meet their learning goals.
If you have any questions or concerns about your child's grades, please reach out to their teachers. The best way to contact teachers is through ParentSquare direct message.
We are here to work together and provide the support your student needs to succeed.

Advisory Update

Advisory Update: Celebrating Growth & Building Skills

This week in advisory, students celebrated our school’s ISAT growth from last year and set goals for this year. We are so proud of the progress our students made in both ELA and Math!

Celebrating Our ELA Progress
  • 6th Grade: Goal 41% → grew from 26% (2022–23) to 39% (2024–25)
  • 7th Grade: Goal 53% → grew from 32% (2022–23) to 51% (2024–25)
  • 8th Grade: Goal 46% → grew from 33% (2022–23) to 44% (2024–25)
Check Out the Great Math Progress
  • 6th Grade: Goal 44% → grew from 21% (2022–23) to 42% (2024–25)
  • 7th Grade: Goal 51% → grew from 28% (2022–23) to 49% (2024–25)
  • 8th Grade: Goal 45% → grew from 21% (2022–23) to 43% (2024–25)

The 2% Challenge: Grow Together
Our district is encouraging every school to help at least 2% more students reach proficiency this year. We call this the “2% Challenge,” connected to our “One Step at a Time” theme. Students reviewed last spring’s ISAT data, reflected on growth targets, and began setting their own goals for this year. They will present these goals to parents at student-led conferences in October.

Advisory Lesson: Handling Peer Pressure
Students also participated in an activity and discussion about handling peer pressure. The lesson focused on:
  • Recognizing how influence from peers can affect decisions
  • Identifying examples of both positive and negative peer pressure
  • Practicing strategies for staying true to personal goals and values
Teachers emphasized that while peer pressure is a normal part of life, learning to respond in positive ways helps students make choices that align with who they want to be. We encourage you to continue this conversation at home by asking your child about situations where they feel peer pressure and how they might respond. Your support helps reinforce the skills we are practicing at school.

Student Attendance

Student attendance is important for success in school. If your child needs to miss school because they are sick or due to a family issue, please let the school know as soon as you can. You can excuse your child in these ways:

If you get a notification from Parent Square that your child is absent, you can reply to that message to excuse them.
If you are notified that your student is absent during the day, you can also message the teacher through ParentSquare with questions.

Excessive Tardies

Being on time is a life skill we emphasize at Kuna Middle School. If a student is tardy (late) to one class 5 times in one week or 5 times total to any class in one week, they will receive a lunch time detention. If there is a reason that the student is late, they should communicate that to their teacher.

A Note from Our Principal, Ms. Wilson

Dear Students, Families, and Staff,

When students are involved in activities at school they are more likely to be academically successful and develop age appropriate social skills. Kuna Middle School offers many opportunities for sports, extra curricular activities and clubs. We encourage your child to get involved!

Girls Basketball Tryouts start on October 6th and Wrestling Tryouts start on October 9th.

Currently our clubs include Pokémon, Dungeons & Dragons, Art, Beyblades, and Chess. Listen to the announcements or look for fliers around school about when clubs meet.

Have a great weekend! Go Kavemen!
