Advisory Update

Red Ribbon Week

Last week in Advisory, we celebrated Red Ribbon Week with the theme “Life is a puzzle, solve it drug-free.” Each healthy choice students make is like adding a perfect puzzle piece that strengthens their future. By choosing to stay drug-free, they’re building a masterpiece filled with health, positivity, and limitless potential.

CAST organized engaging activities for each day, along with fun dress-up days and a door decorating contest. Students really showed their creativity and enthusiasm while designing their doors! Voting for the best door will take place on Monday.

WIN Highlight

WIN Time: Writing for Impact

After third block, students transition to WIN time, which stands for What I Need. Every three weeks, teacher teams meet to regroup students based on their current academic needs.
During the most recent rotation, students focused on Reading and Language Arts skills using data from their i-Ready diagnostics. As a culminating activity, 8th grade students students wrote short narratives inspired by the prompt: “The sign read, ‘Don’t look back.’”

They were encouraged to experiment with their writing by using punctuation for effect, varied sentence openings and lengths, and literary techniques such as similes, metaphors, and personification—all while incorporating unusual and sophisticated vocabulary.
We’re excited to share two creative examples from students who truly embraced the challenge!

Academic Supports

The staff at Kuna Middle School is committed to helping our students succeed academically! We have several programs and resources designed to give your child the support they need to do well in school. We encourage all families to use these resources. Together, we can help our students reach their academic goals.

Tutor.com

Tutor.com is an online service that connects students with live tutors to help them with schoolwork. Think of it like a library study room, but it's on the internet and you can get help any time of the day or night. It's designed to give students one-on-one help to understand tough subjects and finish their homework.

Teacher Office Hours

Teacher office hours are Tuesdays and Thursdays 2:30pm-3:15pm. Students can get extra help from their teachers outside of class time. These sessions allow students to work with their teacher one-on-one or in a small group. Students can ask specific questions about homework or tests, and teachers can explain things in new ways. Please note, there is no afterschool transportation.

WIN Time

WIN Time stands for "What I Need." It's a special time built into the school day to provide every student with personalized support. It allows teachers to give extra help to students who are struggling, and offer challenging and interesting activities to those who are on track. WIN is attached to student's 3rd period class and students move to the appropriate class based on academic data.

Grade Checks

Kuna Middle School will check grades for all students every Friday during Advisory. Parents will receive an email with their child's grades every Friday evening. We encourage you to spend a few moments each weekend reviewing your child's academic progress with them.
If you have any questions or concerns about your child's grades, please reach out to their teachers through ParentSquare direct message.

Student Attendance

Student attendance is important for success in school. If your child needs to miss school because they are sick or due to a family issue, please let the school know as soon as you can. You can excuse your child in these ways:

If you get a notification from Parent Square that your child is absent, you can reply to that message to excuse them.
If you are notified that your student is absent during the day, you can also message the teacher through ParentSquare with questions.

8th Grade Requirements

We know it’s only October, but we’re already in Quarter 2 of the school year. While summer may seem far away, it’s important to remember that Semester 1 grades play a role in summer school decisions.

All 8th grade students are expected to successfully complete the full year of 8th Grade Math. Students who do not pass the course will be invited to Summer School to make up this requirement.

We understand that many families plan vacations during the summer, and we strongly support students having time to rest and recharge. Our goal in sharing this information early is to ensure no one is caught off guard by this requirement.

Counselors will be visiting all 8th Grade Math classes to discuss this further, and we are always available if parents have any questions.
